Information for carbon zero consultation meetings

June 26, 2018 By Robin Grieve

The Ministry for Environment is confused about what net zero means when it comes to methane.

Its consultation booklet for the proposed carbon zero bill gives three options but two of these are exactly the same.

Option 2 is to reduce CO2 to net zero and stabilise methane emissions (they already are of course)

Option 3 is for both CO2 and methane to be net zero by 2050

This diagram explains how methane emissions that are stable (as NZ methane emissions are now) are at net zero by definition. This means that option 2 and 3 are the same. The Minister and his Ministry do not realise this so lets help then with some basic science. If you are going to any meetings download the diagram attached and print it and take some copies to give to the Minister and hand out at the meeting.
