Meeting dates for carbon zero bill.

June 10, 2018 By Robin Grieve

Sorry everybody I forgot to add the meeting dates on to my past post so here they are.

I went to the first one in Whangarei last week.

They are asking for comment on 3 options

Option 1   Reduce CO2 emissions to net zero by 2050 but not methane and nitrous oxide

Option 2   Reduce CO2 and nitrous oxide to net zero by 2050 and stabilize methane emissions

Option 3   Reduce net emissions across all greenhouse gases to zero by 2050

The first 2 options are obviously better than the 3rd option and it is promising that now finally the Government recognizes the difference between these gases. The 3rd option is confusing because when methane emissions are stable (as they want in option 2) they are at net zero effectively anyway. I asked about this but James Shaw and his Ministry seem a bit confused about this and it seems they are referring to net carbon emissions not net greenhouse gas emissions. Most people don’t know the difference and it appears James Shaw is one of them. He is going to need a tutorial.

Most public submitters will be submitting to reduce all gases, why wouldn’t they? They have been told this nonsense about carbon and livestock emissions of methane and the public document does not explain adequately why methane should be left out (probably because the Ministry staff don’t understand it either).

So it is important that you put in a submission for option 1 or 2 and if possible go to a meeting. I will be preparing a short submission template that you can fill in and send and I will send that out to you in a week or so.

The meeting dates are below, and you can make a submission here  https://submissions.mfe.govt.nz/consultations/zero-carbon-bill/make-a-submission
